Kathy had a vision. Sunshine, a field of wildflowers, the kids running wild in the backyard. It was going to be perfect. And then it was late April in Texas, which means the forecast had other ideas.
The morning of the McVey family's session in Kingsland, it was gray, drizzly, and cold enough to make you question everything you thought you knew about spring. But when I pulled up to the house, they were ready to go — and Kathy greeted me with an apology for the chaos before I even got through the door.
I told her not to worry. Chaos is kind of my thing.
When the weather doesn't cooperate, you work with what you've got
One of the things I love most about in-home family sessions in the Texas Hill Country is that the home is the location. You don't need a perfect backdrop or a golden field. You need the couch where the grandkids pile on, the kitchen table where little hands are always into something, and the bed that's apparently irresistible to small children.
The McVey home in Kingsland had all of that and more. It was warm, it was lived-in, and it felt exactly like a place where a family actually gathers. That's what makes these sessions special — the location already has the story built in.
Four littles, two babies, and a case of mistaken identity
The McVeys had four grandchildren present — two toddler girls and their baby brothers. Before we even got started, one of the girls pointed to her cousin and said, completely confident: "This is my friend!"
Kathy had to correct her: "No, honey — that's your cousin." I had to laugh. This is exactly the kind of moment that never makes it into a posed portrait session, and it's also exactly the kind of thing families want to remember forever.
The moment I almost missed
I was getting ready to pack up my gear when I noticed the girls had settled at the kitchen table and started working on a little craft project. Kathy was right there with them, scissors in hand, helping them along. Nobody asked me to photograph it. Nobody was posing for me.
I grabbed my camera and got one more shot. It's one of my favorites from the whole day — a grandmother, two little girls, and a bag of craft supplies. Completely unplanned. Completely real. That's the one she'll print.
What an in-home session near Marble Falls actually looks like
Here's what I want Hill Country families to know: you don't need perfect weather, a clean house, or kids who cooperate on command. Some of the most genuine, beautiful sessions I've done in the Marble Falls and Kingsland area have happened exactly like this one — a little chaotic, a little unplanned, and full of the kind of real moments you can't manufacture.
Kathy said it best in her review:
"Olivia took a rainy day and turned it into the best experience. We had four littles, a messy house, and rain where we had expected sunshine, and she just went with it. We are SO pleased with our pictures. She captured our family perfectly. She does wonderful work and is patient and creative."

When the girls started to get a little antsy with the more structured shots (as four-year-olds tend to do), we made a group decision: bed jumping time.
Reader, it was joyful. Some of my favorite frames of the whole session came from those five minutes of absolute chaos on the grandparents' bed.
